The Master in Mosaic entitled “Living the Venice Workshop. Application of mosaic art” is held in Venice, at the Orsoni Venezia 1888 foundry. The 3, 5 and 10 day classes, are reserved for a maximum of 8 people enrolled in each session. The participants are artists, designers, architects and creative people interested in learning the theoretical and practical elements of the ancient craft of mosaic.

Drawing from the precious legacy of the world renown mosaic artist Lucio Orsoni and the mosaic master Antonella Gallenda, the participants will discover the secrets of mosaic, its history and its innumerable possibilities of expression. As true key players in the life of the artist’s workshop, the students experiment with all phases of mosaic art, from witnessing the production of gold leaf mosaic and smalti in the incandescent furnace, to cutting materials with traditional tools, and learning various mosaic techniques (direct method, indirect method, 3D) on different media.
You can discover the real Venice and go on tours to the San Marco’s Basilica, to Torcello and to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, www.guggenheim-venice.it – which the students can visit for free during the class – with mosaic instruction and immersion into the historic world of Orsoni.
The Master is also accredited through the International Interior Design Association (course 5086) and participants receive 3.2 Continuing Education units.

Key characteristic of the Orsoni Master Classes is that each student has the chance to work on an original mosaic of his/her own choice, so that all students will be working on their own level and on something they love.

Private classes upon request. Orsoni offers One Day Private Classes, Classes for families, for schools, for groups of people (up to 16). Orsoni’s specialized staff is available to discuss and to plan with you your own private class.

Two special thematic classes are offered: Roman Filati Mosaic and Portraiture.

Roman Filati Mosaic: a one week intensive Master, the students will learn how to pull their own filati, and they will be working on a 4 x 4 cm original design; they will learn how to mix and to create colors and how to control the shape and the thickness of their filati. The mother tints will be supplied by Orsoni, as they have been to the Vatican since 1888.
There are no pre-requisites for this class. Maximum 7 students.

Portraiture: a one week immersion in the art of translating the human face through mosaic art.
Portraiture brings soul to a mosaic, and this advanced class will teach students how to release the spirit of a human face. Using the direct method, students will use andamento and shading to create texture, depth and realism.
Students will have the chance to experiment different techniques, from the Byzantine, to the traditionalVenetian pictorial, or to modern solutions.
Under the guidance of the instructor, Antonella Gallenda, the students, who will be working on an original portrait of their choice, will develop their mosaic portrait starting from the forehead, bringing out the soul through the eyes and finishing through the nose and mouth – the “breath” of their mosaic work-.
All 120 flesh colours of smalti will be available for this class as well as the over 2000 shades created by Orsoni.
Maximum 6 students, photos or sketches of the subject must be submitted prior to class.
