Thematic classes: Micro mosaic and Portraiture

Taught by Maestra Antonella Gallenda, the two Orsoni thematic classes allow for a deeper concentration in the techniques of Micro-mosaic and Portraiture.

Micro-mosaic: a two week intensive, students will make their own filati and work on

10 x 10 cm  (approx. 4” x 4”) projects of their own design. They will learn how to mix colors and control the shape and the diameter of the filati. Orsoni will supply the mother tints, as they have been to the Vatican since 1888. No prior mosaic experience is necessary.

Portraiture: a two week immersion into the art of interpreting the human face in mosaic.  Portraiture brings soul to a mosaic and this advanced class will teach students how to release the spirit of the human face. Using the direct method, students will use andamento, and shading to create texture, depth and realism. Students will have access to the 120 flesh tones of Orsoni smalti along with the 2,000+ colors contained in the Orsoni library. Portraits need to be submitted prior to the class for approval and we recommend that students have anatomical drawing experience.
